The Luther Decade is a celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in the ten years leading up to October 2017.
Why ten years of celebrations? Well, as the official body explains:
"The effect of the Reformation was momentous. In fact, it was so important in world history that a one-year commemoration of the 500th anniversary is not enough."
Of course, the Reformation and Martin Luther's influence are not just restricted to Germany: Lutheran communities and Reformed Churches from California through Minnesota to Florida can trace their present-day faith to these events.
Although Luther lived five centuries ago, you can still feel his presence in Wittenberg, at the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt or on the Wartburg. You can:
and, of course, not forgetting the more worldly matters of the flesh, you can:

As well as the regular annual celebrations, each year of the Decade has been given a theme. Here are the themes for the years from 2011 onwards:
2011 - Reformation and Freedom
2012 - Reformation and Music
2013 - Reformation and Tolerance
2014 - Reformation and Politics
2015 - Reformation - Image and Bible
2016 - Reformation in a United World
2017 - Anniversary of the Reformation
According to the Foundation organizing the celebrations, the themes are designed to
"signal the breadth of the renewal brought about by the Reformation. They address questions to today’s Church, State, and Society regarding, for example: freedom and solidarity, responsibility and education, loyalty to one’s own beliefs, and tolerance."
Events and sites of interest are spread throughout Luther Country and beyond. That's why we have put together ideas for four different tours that group leaders may be interested in offering to their members over the coming years.

These are sample itineraries, but of course with sufficient travelers group leaders can have their tour tailor-made to their own interests.
If you would like to know more about the Protestant Reformation itself, then take a look at our Reformation history page.
